Horrible hard-drive! Amazon should not stock this item! It’s a disgrace to Amazon’s name! Problem started the minute I finished installing the operating system. I can’t even watch a smooth Youtube video without it constantly spinning up and down. The video will stop and lag when the drive actually stops dead with clicking sounds before spinning up again! Ridiculous! It’s so loud to the point that I feel like there is an added fan inside of my Macbook! I trusted WD, not anymore! I wasted all those time installing the new system!

This is an economical, high capacity, average performance hard drive. A high performance notebook drive would typically be 7200 RPM, 16MB buffer. This drive can be turned into an external drive for backups etc by simply purchasing an external 2.5″ case such as Acomdata Tango 2.5-Inch USB 2.0 eSATA Portable Enclosure for SATA Hard Drive TNGXXXUSE-RED (Red) or you can put your existing notebook hard drive in the 2.5″ enclosure and use that as an external drive with the WD6400BEVT as your new main notebook drive. If you are planning on swapping out your main notebook drive, be sure to search for Acronis Migrate Easy software. It’s free (trial use) and transfers your entire operating system, applications, and data to the new drive without any problems. Check it out!

Another well behaved drive from WD. I congratulate them on their consistent quality. The drive replaces a loud, power sucking POS drive from Seagate. Thanks Dell for sticking me with an inferior product. You deserve your sales plunge.
Update 12-Jan-2010: Drive failed after 57 days. I’M SO DONE WITH UNRELIABLE NOTEBOOK HARD DRIVES. FROM NOW ON, IT’S SSDs ONLY.

I ordered this drive (on Special Sale on Cyber Monday) directly from Amazon. It was purchased in conjunction with a new Patriot Home Box Office unit. The Patriot stuff arrived in its factory packaging and seemed to survive the UPS gauntlet just fine. However, the Western Digital hard drive only had a thin bubble wrap covering and was placed inside a larger box together with two inflatable clear plastic air cushions (one of which was totally deflated and the other partially deflated), thus allowing the hard drive to be bounced around within that inner packing box while enduring the UPS gauntlet. Amazon should be ashamed of itself for packaging a hard drive in such a careless fashion.
I haven’t yet had an opportunity to fire up the Box Office unit with that 2.5″ hard drive installed, but I won’t be too surprised if the damn thing doesn’t work, considering the deplorable packaging that was employed by Amazon. It is most interesting that Amazon touts this hard drive as NOT being enclosed in any type of clamshell packaging, supposedly for the convenience of the buyer. Well, I sure would have liked to have something more than the flimsy, thin plastic bubble pocket protecting my hard drive – I would have gladly endured opening a plastic clamshell enclosure, since it would be better than nothing – which is what I got – virtually nothing to to protect my hard drive!
The moral of this story is: Buyers Beware – the Amazon Shipping folks don’t seem to give much of a damn about how they package your hard drive for surviving the UPS gauntlet!

I bought this HDD to replace the original 40GB Hitachi HDD that came with my PS3 as I wanted to start using my PS3 as a real media center, and 40GB just wasn’t going to cut it. Installation was a breeze ( if you need an easy walkthrough on the HDD swapping steps, I used [...] ), and it is noticeably quieter than the PS3′s original HDD. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get a little more out of their PS3.
