What you must know about pregnancy and renovations?

By: fongsuimy

Most Chinese knows that one should not carry renovation works in a house if a family member is pregnant.
This taboo is observed my many Chinese households and generally accepted without question. It may be due to the observation that renovation work carried out in the mother’s presence appears to have a negative effect on the yet unborn child.
Is there a good reason – scientific or otherwise – for observing this taboo?
No one knows for sure but there are at least a few good reasons that I can think of.
During renovation works, the chances of an accident happening is higher. For a pregnant person the risk is even higher. During pregnancy, the center of gravity is shifted and it is much easier to fall down. The ligaments are also softer while the joints are less stable and it increases further the risk of injuries.

It is likely that the pregnant person may get involved in moving items about. Many studies show a link between miscarriages and strenuous labor.
Pregnant mothers who smoke increases the risk of fetal injury to the unborn child. It is also a cause of premature birth and low birth weight. During renovations, the environment is usually dusty and unhealthy. While I am not sure if it has the same effect as smoking, it would be wise to take precaution.

Recent evidence suggests that the babies in the womb are aware of the surrounding noises. The studies also show that loud noises – in particular – can cause a change in the heart rate of the fetus. In addition evidence also suggests that fetus may be affected by the mother’s response to the external noise. It appears that the fetus is not protected from the mother’s response to the surroundings and this may hamper proper fetal development.
A study conducted on Japan with over 1000 births produce evidence to suggest that noisy areas have a greater chance of producing low-weight babies.
What if you must renovate? Is there a way around it?
There is. Since the renovation affects the pregnant person and the unborn child, the solution is to move them to a friend or relative’s house. They simply have to stay away during the renovation works.
