Media Relations Training

By: Dave Griffiths

"The function of writing is to build a space in which others can think." Ed Schlossberg, Writer

"According to most surveys, an individual's biggest fear is public speaking. The Number Two is death. Does that sound correct? That means to the average person, if you attend a funeral, you're better off in the casket than delivering the eulogy." John Steinbeck, Novelist

If you are writing or speaking in public, successful communication starts and ends with the what -- that is, the content. The how will come easier. As writing training and presentation skills training assist you in gaining confidence (and you will have confidence because you'll be a trained pro) you'll have no worries writing or speaking in public.

In order to accomplish that, aided by writing skills training, keep in mind the three pillars of effective communication, written or spoken:

Writing exercises the mind. Compared to a spontaneous conversation, writing -- whether a presentation to a client or a report for the owner or a sales proposal -- furnishes you the time to show how smart you are.

Know your audience and your readers. How much do they know already? Are they experts? Do they want to be entertained or trained or persuaded? What do you want them to get from your email?

Edit and rewrite and, when public speaking, practice time and again. If you don't check your work carefully before sending it, or rehearse the style and delivery of your presentation, you risk looking careless and unprofessional. It's called quality control, and without it effective communication is almost impossible.
