How to Control Your Spending Over the Holidays

By: Clancy Fort

Here we go into another holiday season. Yeah ...my kids have been emphatically telling me for weeks which what not their existence depends upon. For my oldest son, his list of PlayStation games is quite impressive. If I was to get every game he wants, school would be a distant memory. I think that's what he is hoping for.. He would become a teenager at 5, eat, poop, sleep, play, repeat. My little one just figured out this Christmas, Santa Claus thing and everything advertised on television is perfect for him. And, then there's the expensive child, , the “fashionista” 11 year old.
Then, there's the whole shopping experience. I want to get what I need and get out as quickly as possible. But, this is the season for shopping distractions which always seems to add another couple of $100 to the Christmas budget. So, this year with a recession advancing, I'm putting my foot down and setting some simple rules to follow for getting through the gift part of the holiday season without breaking the bank.
So, here we go...
1.There is a per person budget of $100 and not a dollar more. This for the immediate family only.
2.The extended family has agreed to a “Secret Santa” with a max budget of $50.00. (This is fun and only $50.00 compared to the $450 I spent last year.
3.Cash is king. We are not using credit cards this year. They tend to give the feeling that we have more money than we really have.
4. Mommy and I are not giving gifts that have monetary value. We are giving chore coupons instead.
5.I'm shopping entirely online this year (debit card only!). No distractions. Just getting what I need and done.
By doing these things, I think I can save over $2,000 this holiday and the kids won't really know the difference.
